Identifying and celebrating our Gifted and Talented young people

The ambition of the Gifted & Talented strand;

● Raising the quality of PE for Gifted and Talented young people - supporting schools to recognise young people who are gifted in PE and to ensure differentiation for them within the PE Curriculum
● Ensuring appropriate personal development support for young talented performers - guiding schools to provide and embed personal development support for young talented performers in sport / Dance within their school
● Raising the quality of coaching and competition for talented performers in sport - supporting the expansion of the talent pool by providing high quality coaching and competition pathways that allow talented performers to progress

Multi Skill Academies (MSA) - Academies are hosted at a Sports College. Academies run for children in years 5 and 6 and are sometimes held for year 7's, to help with the transition to Secondary School subject to funding. These take place usually during the school holidays. Identification of the young people is either through the use of the Gifted & Talented Toolkit which all primary schools are aware of  (Toolkit can be downloaded from our resources section), competition or a recommendation by a school teacher.

Junior Athlete Education - The JAE Framework aims to:

  • Provide a package of tools and resources to help schools provide talent development support for their ‘talented in sport’ pupils.
  • Ensure that schools are able to embed the support into their whole school G&T programme.
  • Provide a holistic 5 ability based model which is meaningful to both the PE national curriculum and world class performance sport.

The JAE Framework is based on four pillars. These cover how schools can recognise, guide, support and inspire talented young sportsmen and women:

JAE Pillar 1: recognising talent:
Select the right young people onto the schools talent support programme.

JAE Pillar 2: guiding talent:
Guide young performers through the critical years of physical and mental development, and on to the correct pathway that allows them to realise their sporting potential as adults.

JAE Pillar 3: supporting talent
Empower the school’s young talented performers with the skills and support them  to balance the conflicting challenges of their sport, studies and personal lives.

JAE Pillar 4: inspiring talent
Inspire the school’s current and future young performers to achieve their potential and to develop into role models, within the school and the wider community.
