KS 3 and 4 Badminton Competition
The city’s annual Badminton competitions have taken place over the last week. Competitors from across the city competed over three nights at Babington and Judge Meadow schools. In total over 130 participants took part in the competition from 11 schools across the city.
The first competition took place on Wednesday 13th January at Judge Meadow Community College and involved Key Stage 3 students from the Crown Hills partnership. A total of 32 competitors took part, from 5 schools in what was a very competitively fought competition. Within the girl’s competition, Crown Hills Community College won both of their matches to come out on top, beating Moat Community College in to second and Judge Meadow into third.
Crown Hills found success again in the boy’s competition. The boys, who were not beaten throughout the tournament finished ahead of St Pauls Catholic School in second and Moat in third.
Both the boys and girls team from Crown Hills will now go on to represent the city at the county finals.
The second competition took place at Babington Community College and involved students in Key Stage 3 and 4 from the Lancaster partnership. The Key Stage 3 boy’s tournament was dominated by Lancaster, winning their three games without dropping a game. This just left English Martyrs and Riverside to battle it out for second and third place, with English Martyrs just coming out on top after be
ating Riverside in the last match of the competition. The Key Stage 4 event was a much closer affair but the end result remained the same. Lancaster came out on top again and will now send two very strong teams through to the county finals.
The Key Stage 3 Girls event was one of the closest tournaments of the SSP competition. With all three schools wining one of their matches, the decision went down to the number of games won. Winners by two games were Riverside, with Sir Jonathan North finishing in second and English Martyrs in third. The Key Stage 4 competition was another closely fought battle, with Sir Jonathan North managing to take the first place that they so narrowly missed out on in the Key Stage 3 competition.
The third and final SSP competition saw Key Stage 4 competitors from the Crown Hills partnership compete once again at Judge Meadow. Like the two competitions that came before it the competition was of an exceptionally high standard and like the previous competition, the girl’s event was dominated by Crown Hill Community College. Crown Hills who were unbeaten throughout the tournament beat Moat into second and Judge Meadow into third.
Unlike the Key Stage 3 event, Crown Hills were unable to replicate the success they found in the earlier competition. With six schools playing in this competition, the schools were split into two pools. The winner from Pool A, Judge Meadow Community College
played the winner from Pool B, Moat Community College in the final. Moat came out in top and will go through to represent the city at the county finals.
All of the competitions were played in an excellent manner; this was especially impressive given that all of the matches were umpired by the players. The quality of all of those that took part truly shows that the city has some very good badminton players within in its schools and badminton is clearly emerging as a very strong sport.
